Solstice Walks in 2018 Broward Heart Walk to Raise Awareness About Connection Between Nation's Leading Cause of Death and Oral Health

Solstice Benefits, Inc., (Solstice), a South Florida-based dental and vision insurer, raised nearly $20,000 for the American Heart Association’s (AHA’s) 2018 Broward Heart Walk on Sunday, April 22, 2018.

Solstice joined over 10,000 participants in walking with the AHA to raise awareness and funds to combat the No. 1 killer of Americans: cardiovascular disease. As a dental insurer, Solstice educates consumers about the negative connection between oral health conditions, such as gum disease, which can increase the risk of developing heart disease by 19 percent.

Many people don't realize that if you're already at a high risk for heart disease, bacteria in the mouth can get into the bloodstream and make its way to the heart valves and inner lining, causing life-threatening heart conditions like endocarditis.

Dr. Leonard Weiss, Chief Executive Officer

At over 113 employees strong, Solstice was the fifth company overall in fundraising—surrounded by organizations many times its size. While the company fosters participation in a variety of charitable causes year-round, the Heart Walk is unrivaled in employee enthusiasm and team spirit.

“Many people don’t realize that if you’re already at a high risk for heart disease, bacteria in the mouth can get into the bloodstream and make its way to the heart valves and inner lining, causing life-threatening heart conditions like endocarditis,” says Solstice CEO, Dr. Leonard Weiss. “Solstice is committed to getting the word out that maintaining good oral health is not optional care: it’s vital to overall health.”

The company’s consistent level of participation, commitment and willingness to go above and beyond to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease and its oral health connection, is evidence of research that shows that employees are more engaged when they can improve their communities through their employer. According to Great Places to Work and Fortune, of the 357,000 people surveyed for the Best Workplace list in 2017, employees who were willing to go the extra mile were those who had a positive experience partnering with their employers to give back to their communities.
